LSVT for Parkinson’s Disease

LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD have been implemented with patients wtih Parkinson’s disease and have shown amazing effects!

There are currently up to 1 million people in the United States wtih Parkinson’s Disease and close to 60,000 people diagnosed each year. There is a great need for intervention within this population.

As OTs, we need to have prepartory methods we can implement to prepare these clients and set them up for greater occupation performance in their daily tasks.

Have you heard of LSVT therapies? It is a method of  challenging neurological pathways to increase their performance. With increased amplitude of movement and sound, improvements in balance, motor control, and over all quality of life have been documented.

You can become certified in the protocol through a weekend course and can begin using the protool with clients. It is an awesome protocol for Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) collaboration.

This protocol can be utilized in a private clinic or within in-patient facilties. Most recently we also saw LSVT concepts used at Rock Steady Boxing (post on that amazing experience coming soon).

Below are some videos of my classmates practicing the protocol. We spoke in class about how great the need is in this population and how we could better serve this population after graduation.
